Father Francis Ball began his studies for the priesthood at St. Joseph's College, Upholland, in 1972, and, when the senior house closed there in 1975, transferred to Ushaw College, Durham, where he completed his studies in 1978.


Ordained by Archbishop Derek Warlock, on 2nd July of that year, at Sacred Heart, St. Helen's, by Archbishop Warlock, Father Ball's first appointment was as a curate at St. Teresa's, Penwortham, where he remained until 1982. was ordained in 1978* and took up the position of curate at St. Jude's in 1982, where he remained until 1988.

In 1982 he was appointed assistant priest at St. Jude's, Wigan, until 1988, and then spent a year at St. Francis of Assisi, Garston, Liverpool.

His next appointment was as curate at St. Edward's, Wigan, until 1998, when he was made Parish Priest at Sacred Heart, Chorley.
