St. Jude's Journal

.

The first edition of St. Jude's Journal was published in Advent 1993. It was largely the inspiration of its first Editor, the late Mrs. Margaret Halliwell, who, sadly, died on 18th November 1999. Margaret's passing was a grave loss, not just to the Journal, but to the entire parish community, for which she worked unstintingly.

.

In her first Editorial, back in 1993, Margaret wrote:

.

"This Magazine is breaking new ground in a parish which has grown from small beginnings almost 30 years ago, to become the large, vibrant community of St. Jude's today. Although the community is still young in comparison to others in the town, it has strong roots firmly founded in the old parish of St. Joseph with its long history in the Faith. There was a strong sense of community and family spirit alive in those compact streets, around a church which will always be remembered with affection.

.

"Times have changed and so has the pace of life. In the old days, whole families gained strength and support from living in close proximity to each other, and though we may feel sad at the passing of that kind of close community, change and progress are part of our human lot. By retaining the good things we have known from the past, our present lives will be more enriched, and if it is more difficult today to share our news, views and memories, this magazine will serve a useful purpose in that context . . ."

.

In the subsequent years that Margaret was its Editor, up until Spring 1999, the Journal did,  indeed, keep us all up to date with Parish matters and events and, in no small way, helped to bring the Parish Family that much closer together. It gave the opportunity to share each other's joys and hopes and the inevitable sorrows and disappointments.

.

Over those years, from 1993 to 1999, Margaret and the Journal Team produced 17 Editions, which, apart from giving pleasure to the reader, have collectively become an important historical documentation of life in St. Jude's Parish. Indeed, much information for this Website is taken from past issues of the Journal.

.

For the special Millennium Edition, which Margaret had planned but could not carry out due to her illness, Colin Nicholson was asked to take over the Editorship. Subsequently, Edition 18 was produced to mark the new Millennium, and, to mark the special occasion, at Margaret's suggestion, coloured pages were included for the first time.

By the invaluable efforts of the whole Journal Team, the Parish Magazine has continued to flourish, and, hopefully, has maintained Margaret's high standards. Now, with Colin still the Editor, it is published twice-yearly, with the Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter Editions. The last Edition was No. 21 : Autumn/Winter 2001/2002.

.

Members of the Journal Team wish to thank everyone who has contributed in any way to its production over the years, and to convey a special thanks to our sponsors.
