Prayers for Any Occasion . . .

"Love to pray.
Feel often during the day the need for prayer
and take trouble to pray.
Prayer enlarges the heart until it is
capable of containing
God's gift of Himself."

Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

BEGINNING WITH A PRAYER FOR EACH MORNING OF THE WEEK . . .

SUNDAY

Lord, moved by Your boundless love,
You created me in Your own image and
redeemed me by Your own suffering and death.
Walk with me today as my Strength, Healer and Comforter.
Shine through me to others, so that in my words and actions
I may build, heal and comfort.
This I ask, in faith and confidence,
Through Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

MONDAY
Bless me this day with an open and probing mind;
Free my mind of all narrowness and prejudice.
Bless me with an open and sharing heart,
Free me of all self-centredness and of all hostility.
This I ask in Christ's name.
Amen.

TUESDAY
Dear Lord, our Father, through all the activity of this day
please give me an inner peace.
Bless me with a quiet in my mind
that I may hear You when You speak to me.
Give me a quiet in my heart that I may be open to Your love.
Give me a quiet in my being that I may know Your presence in my life.
This I ask, through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

WEDNESDAY
Lord, please bless and strengthen my faith in You,
so that I can deal with the doubts and difficulties of this day.
Bless and deepen my trust in You,
So that I can know the joy of Your presence.
This I ask, through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

THURSDAY
Lord, walk with me this day.
Protect me from the dangers to which this world
and my weakness expose me.
Help me to use my time and talents today to do good.
Help me to use my words and actions
to help, to heal and to comfort.
This I ask, in faith and confidence,
Through Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

FRIDAY
Loving Redeemer,
You sacrificed Your own life that I might live.
Through the hours of this day,
unite me more closely with You, my Lord and my God.
In Your love and mercy, heal my sickness, strengthen my weakness,
enlighten my blindness and enrich the poverty of my spirit.
Help me to grow in charity, in patience and
in the desire to speak and act justly and compassionately.
This I ask, in faith and confidence,
Through Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

SATURDAY
Help me to love You, my Lord and my God,
and grow in respect and love for all those
You have given me to love and serve.
Help me this day to conquer anger with gentleness,
greed with generosity, apathy with renewed dedication,
and indifference with honest concern.
Help me to reach out to You by reaching out to others,
remembering what I do to others, I also do to You.
This I ask, in faith and confidence,
Through Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

FOR SOMEONE SUFFERING FROM ARTHRITIS:

.

Dear God

I know that you are with me. You attend to me always and not one moment of mine is wasted. Let your healing power flow through me from head toe, revitalising me and giving me new hope.

FOR SOMEONE TROUBLED BY ADDICTION:
.
Almighty Father
Addictions are deeply ingrained habits I have practised for so long. Because of my addiction to . . . . , I feel that my life is not my own. But my life is mine - a gift from You, my God. Help me to take my life back. I willingly open myself to all the means You offer me to experience the profound joy of discovering who I am.

FOR SOMEONE SUFFERING FROM DEPRESSION:
.
Dear God
Sometimes I feel I am surrounded by a dark, heavy cloud. Not only is it around me, it is within me too.
Help me to remember that no matter how dark the day, the sun is shining - I just can't see it now. I am a chosen child of Yours and I hear You calling my name. I promise myself to use all the means available to help myself. I trust in Your presence to bring light out of darkness, hope out of despair.

FOR SOMEONE IN PAIN:
.
Father in Heaven
Many times Your Son, Jesus, released people from pain. At other times pain seemed to be something to be gone through. I don't even know which to pray for: the release of the pain or the courage to go through it.
One thing I believe - You are with me because You love me. Whether I am to be released from my pain or am to go through it, Your resurrection is happening to me already and I feel Your life flowing through me.

FOR THOSE WHO HAVE FAILED TO FIND EMPLOYMENT:
.
Dear God
Not having a job tempts me to doubt my worth. The days become very long and I become anxious and depressed.
Help me to remember that my most important job is to become a saint and nothing can hinder that work unless I fear and doubt. I want Your love to flow into me and through me to others. I am Your presence for others just by being the person You made me to be. I do not despair. I am ready to do Your will and am doing it by being open to You and the opportunities You present to me each day.

FOR ONE WHO GRIEVES:
.
Dearest Father
I am experiencing a most painful loss. Is it okay to cry? To sob and sob? Or should I go numb and just make life as something to be gone through?
All I have to do is remember Jesus: how He cried at the death of his friend, Lazarus, and I know the answer. I can feel what I am feeling. And there's no time limit either. Be with me as I cry, dear Lord, and help me not to be afraid to share my pain with other understanding people. By Your grace, the pain of my loss will ease and become more bearable.

FOR SOMEONE LOOKING FOR A SPOUSE:
.
Dear God
I would love to have a good person with whom to share my life. I can go to one extreme and frantically search for that special other, or I can go to the other extreme of sitting at home, brooding, and expecting the person to knock on my door.
I remember that I have my most special spouse, dear God, and that is You. I also have myself and can be very good company. I shall try to peacefully move into the company of others, enjoying them, and being open to the possibility of another person joining their life with mine.

FOR SOMEONE SUFFERING THE TRAUMA OF SEPARATION:
.
Dearest Lord
Sometimes I feel like a failure. This isn't what was supposed to happen. I look back at the times when my spouse and I seemed so happy together. Was it real. What happened?
Help me to remember, Lord, that while this important relationship has ended, I continue to have a capacity to love and to be loved. Help me to know that You are with me and that I do have a future. My life is of tremendous worth and I shall serve You with it in all my interactions every day.

FOR FAMILY MEMBERS WHO NO LONGER PRACTISE THEIR FAITH:
.
Dear God
My heart is heavy because of those members of my family who no longer practise their faith. Help me to know that Your love for them is without beginning or end. Keep them in Your love and give me peace of mind knowing that You love them even more than I do.

FOR THOSE IN OLD AGE:
.
Dear God
I am getting old, and with old age comes diminishment. I can't see as well or move as easily. I get tired more quickly. And this is a society that doesn't always respect old age.
But, dear God, I realise that I am moving towards Your wonderful "forever-love". I am seeing things in a new perspective now. I think I know what matters. So, help me, dear God, to just focus more and more on You and to allow You to lead me to Your loving Self.

BEFORE STUDIES OR A FORTHCOMING EXAM . . .
.

Blessed St. Anthony, I place my studies under your powerful protection.

Your intercession has often helped me to make progress in learning and devotion. I choose you as the protector and patron of my studies.

Through your intercession may the Holy Spirit fill me with light and strength, intelligence and humility.

I implore You, Lord, My God, Creator of all things, to grant me the ability to grasp things correctly, and the talent of being exact in my explanations.

PRAYER FOR HELP IN GIVING OF ONE'S BEST . . .
.
Almighty Father, help me to be truly human.
Help me to be able to appreciate and bring out the best in everyone around me.
Help me to be able to give of the best in myself.
Lord, help me to appreciate all that you have given me. Amen.
.

COUNT ONE'S BLESSINGS . . .

.
Let us count our many blessings
Name them one by one.
Think back to distant childhood
And remember how it's done.
Thank You for the folk who love me,
For my work and for my play,
For my food and for my shelter,
For needs met day by day.
.
When I'm low, for those who cheer me,
When I'm bright for friends and fun,
For the joys of books and learning,
Thank You, Lord, for all You've done.

FOR MOTORISTS . . .
.
Almighty God, ever active and ever at rest, give us a mind so set in peace with You that we use our vehicles with a true spirit of courtesy and respect for others, so that, avoiding all unnecessary tension, anxiety and desire for speed, may we protect others and ourselves from needless danger and distress and come to our destination safely and in your grace.

FOR THOSE WHO ARE TROUBLED . . .
.
Come to Me, all of you who are weary and find life burdensome; I will refresh you. Take my yoke on your shoulders and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble of heart. You shall find rest because my yoke is easy and my burden light.

PRAYER FOR THE YEAR . . .

.
Lord of the broken bread,
heal the broken-hearted,
knead together all who are separated,
Unite rich and poor,
the weak and the strong,
the lost and the found.
May the fellowship and love
spread until we become one
in communion with You
and one another.

FOR THE CHURCH IN TODAY'S WORLD . . .
.
Teach me your ways, Lord;
make them known to me.
Teach me to live according to Your truth,
for You are my God who saves me.
I always trust in You.
Remember, O Lord, your kindness and Your constant love,
which You have shown me from long ago.
(Psalm 25:4-6)

A CELTIC PRAYER . . .

.
Reveal in us Your glory;
Stir in us Your power;
Renew in us Your kingdom;
Develop in us your faith;
Show in us Your way;
Open in us Your love;
Work in us Your miracles;
Revive in us Your resurrection;
Abide in us Yourself.

FOR OUR CHILDREN . . .
.
They go away from us,
their lives sprouting, green and unpredictable
out of the sediment of our love and care.
Lord, do not let us hold on with clenched possessiveness,
neither let them stray beyond the horizon of Your grace.
Amen.

FOR OUR FAMILIES . . .
.
Father of all,
You gave us life and we than You.
You gave us our parents - keep them safe
and bring them to You.
You trust us with our children -
guide our hearts so that we may lead them to You.
Help all Your family live in Your love.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

AN IRISH BLESSING . . .

.
May there always be work for your hands to do,
May your purse always hold a coin or two,
May the sun always shine on your window pane,
May a rainbow be certain to follow the rain,
May the hand of a friend always be near
And may God fill your heart with gladness and cheer.

BEFORE SLEEP . . .
.
Watch, dear Lord, with those who wake, or watch or weep tonight.
And give Your angels charge over those who sleep.
Tend Your sick ones.
Rest Your weary ones.
Bless Your dying ones.
Soothe Your suffering ones.
And all for Your love's sake.
Amen.

ON GROWING OLD . . .
.
Blessed are they who understand
my faltering step and shaking hand;
Blessed are they who seem to know
My eyes are dim, my mind is slow;
Blessed are they with cheery smile
Who stop to chat a little while;
Blessed are they that never say
"You've told that story twice today!"
Blessed are they that make it known
I'm loved, respected, not alone.

FOR PEACE . . .

(From the Mass for Peace and as recited during the Second World War)

O God, from Whom all holy desires, all right counsels and all just works do proceed; give to Thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that our hearts may be disposed to obey Thy commandments, and the fear of enemies being removed, our times, by Thy protection, may be peaceful.

.

O God, Who sufferest not the nations who believe in Thee to be overwhelmed by any peril; vouchsafe to receive the prayers and offerings of Thy servants, that in Thy mercy Thou wouldst grant to Christendom peace and security against all enemies.

.

O God, the author and lover of peace, to know Whom is to live, to serve Whom is to reign; shield Thy suppliants from all assaults, so that we who trust in Thy protection may fear no foe. Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.
